Presentations/Talks:

Visit from the Stars

Outreach talk, 15-April 2016, 6th Primary School of Lakatamia

Dr. Andreas Papadopoulos

Abstract: A trip from our Solar system to the nearest stars and to nearby galaxies. The talk was presented to primary school students (up to 6th grade) and aimed to teach them in simple terms the physics of the stars and how are used to build up galaxies.

Discover our Universe!

Outreach talk, 23-March 2016, Science & Space Cafe, Nicosia

Dr. Andreas Papadopoulos

Abstract: Come along and learn about Exo-planets, Stars, Supernovae and Black-Holes. The presentation would show updates about the most recent discoveries in astronomy and cosmology; for example the discovery of Gravitational waves, the possibility of the existance of "Planet Nine" in our solar system and Hubble Space Telescope's recent record breaking announcement.

Starting from the Big Bang, we will guide you through the formation of the Universe we live in, explaining along the way what galaxies are made of and how our very own Solar System was born. Come along and learn all about the planets, stars, supernovae and black holes with the help of a professional Astrophysicist!

Online Tools:

Astronomical Picture of the Day - APOD

Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.
Powered by NASA.

Solar System Scale Model Calculator

Calculate the scaled planet diameters and planet-sun distances for a solar system model. Then place the scale model on top of a map and see how far the solar system extends. Tip: if the size of the Sun is reduced down to a basketball (diameter ~24cm), then Earth is as big as a quilting pin!

Galaxy Zoo

Classify Galaxies! To understand how galaxies formed astronomers need your help to classify them according to their shapes.

Galaxy Zoo is a Zooniverse project. The Zooniverse is a collection of web-based Citizen Science projects that use the efforts and abilities of volunteers to help reseachers deal with the flood of data that confronts them.

ESA Star Mapper

A visualisation based on data from the European Space Agency's first space astrometry mission called Hipparcos, which operated from 1989 to 1993 and precisely measured the positions, motions and distances of more than 100,000 stars. The ESA Star Mapper visualisation shows 59,921 stars from the Hipparcos Catalogue.

Cromoscope

View our own Milky Way galaxy via different set of eyes, from gamma-ray to radio waves.

Scale of the Universe v2

Scroll up/down, from the quantum scale up to the observable Universe.
